The Famous Blue is a historic mine located 3 kilometres east of the Mulga Queen indigenous community.
It was active between 1903 to about 1910. The original prospectors could not be located, however the mine was initially developed by a syndicated headed by A.E. Morgans. He was heavily involved in mining in the region including mines at Mount Morgans, named after him. He was also Premier of Western Australia for a short time. The location had a fair amount of alluvial gold, with a 30 ounce nugget found.
The Famous Blue leases covered 1509T, 1567T, 1582T, 1558T and 1559T. It was a large low grade affair centred on a white quartz blow. Some rich patches were found containing beautiful specimen stone.
There were two inclined shafts to 130 feet, connected by a well timbered drive covering 310 feet. Costs for the mine were high due to the treacherous nature of the ground. A Huntingdon mill was initially erected, before being replaced by a ten head stamp battery in early 1906.
After the syndicate left in early 1907, Renownden, Wilson and William Rose Grant took the mine on tribute, leasing the battery. Renowden subsequently left, Grant continued, but not for long as it was found the prior syndicate had removed most of the gold, and the crushings were poor. Grant left, leaving some employees wages unpaid.
Burney and McLachlan (surnames) worked the mine briefly in 1915, and found a small rich leader missed by the prior owners.
Tom Coverley worked the mine during the mid 1930's gold boom, and was said to have found more gold at the location.
