Union Mine
The W.A. Union lease was east of the John Bull mine. It was detached from other leases in the area which followed the lode south-east, while W.A. Union was to the north-west.
The lease was initially developed by an Adelaide company, but by 1898 was in the hands of a local syndicate. GML 114.
The lease was 18 acres, containing four reefs, trending north-west to south-east, and probably a continuation of the reefs in the John Bull lease. There was also a major cross reef, at right angles to the main reef near the north-west corner of the lease. The main reef dipped vertically. Good gold grades were found near the walls.
A shaft had been sunk near the centre of the block to 129 feet deep. At the 30 foot level, drives had been put 70 feet north-west and 55 feet south-west. At the 70 foot level, drives had been put 50 feet north-west and 20 feet south-east. The reef averaged 1 foot wide.
The main shaft was down to 80 feet, with drives at the 30 foot level, 60 feet west and 50 feet east, at the 70 foot level with drives 50 feet east and 45 feet west.
Another shaft was 150 feet to the west down to a depth of 70 feet. Further west was another shaft to 35 feet down. The reef here was narrow, but a good grade of gold. Some crushings had occurred with ounces matching tonnages.
The lease was voided in October 1899. It then became part of the Union Jack lease GML 812. In turn this lease was voided in July 1903, and subsequently became part of GML 888. This was also voided in February 1904, and it became part of the Cumberland Extended lease GML 925, then GML 934.
