It is assumed the mine is named after the Scottish regiment rather than the breed of cattle. The mine was founded in the early 1890's in one source, or more likely 1916 in another, by brothers Alex and Samuel Polson. Here they remained until the late 1930's. The mine is about 40 kilometres south of Marvel Loch, and is within the Dulcie group of mines, west of the Marvel Loch-Forrestania Road.
The Polson's erected a 5 head battery, which served to crush ore from their own mine, but also for prospectors from nearby mines. The earliest independent report of activity at the site by the Polsons was 1923. Regular activity from their own mine, and crushings for others is reported until 1938. By the late 1940's both were deceased, so it is thought by the late 1930's they were advanced in age, and did not re-open the business after the war.
In the late 1940's, Jack Hunt and Phil Lawrence were operating the mine and battery. They stated the Polsons had relied on dish values in testing the lode. As this was partially sulphides, this method did not give a clear value for gold in the deposit. The Polsons had mined only the upper levels, and believed values decreased with depth. Hunt and Lawrence found the lower level values at 15 dwt, and began mining the lode. No records were found for activity after 1950.
