The Democrat gold mine was at the far northern end of the Paddy's Flat line of lode. The Halcyon mine bordered it to the south. Being at the extreme end of the lode, it was never a strong producer, and had limited production. Like the Halcyon, the lode contained a network of small quartz leaders, some carrying gold. It was one of the few places near Meekatharra in the early days with drinkable water.
The mine was one of the first leases on the field, but information on it was scant. The first record is a crushing in 1903 by S. McDonald and then 1905 by A. Holden. The mine is held by a local syndicate in 1910, but no further information was found. Around this time the mine was taken under option by English Company Hannans Star, along with neighbouring Halcyon, but little mining took place.
In 1937, 500 tonnes was sent through the Fenian mine mill from a large dump of ore left around the main shaft from 30 years before. The owners at this time are Flynn and Rinaldi (surnames).
When old mines are taken over by individual prospectors, it largely remains unreported. A sad end came to John Thompson, aged 75, in 1936. He was working the old Democrat mine alone, when a stope collapsed burying him under 5 tonnes of earth. The body was recovered several days later after he was noticed missing.
Subsequently to this being written the pit has been filled in.
