Name(s) in local language(s):
Ferrata Cave, Monte Cucco, Costacciaro, Provincia di Perugia, Umbria, Italia
Located on the northwestern slope of Monte Cucco, NE of Pian delle Macinare.
The cave extends along a discontinuity in limestone, within a layer rich in metallic nodules, consisting of main marcasite with minor pyrite. Peculiar speleothems have been observed: pinkish-white concretions and colourless crystals (gypsum); reddish crusts (limonite and goethite); yellow coatings (sulphur); purplish-yellow globular efflorescences (fibroferrite) (Forti & Salvatori, 1987).
Fibroferrite, on the basis of XRD analysis only, was previously confused with stilpnomelane (Hill & Forti, 1986).
