Birdlings Flat Gemstone and Fossil Museum is unique as it is the only gemstone and fossil display from a private collection open to the public. The display is mostly Canterbury material gathered from the rivers and hills, agate, quartzite, jasper, petrified woods etc, of which after many years would have all ended up on the beach at Birdlings Flat.
Named after a local settler. A windswept pebble covered beach, known for gemstones. The beach is dangerous for swimming, or getting sucked out into the waves while bending over looking for gemstones at the water's edge. The stones come down from rivers, and are swept up the coast by currents, to be deposited on the beach at the base of the Banks Peninsula. The best time to collect is after a storm.
Coloured quartz, jasper, chalcedony, agate, sard, sardonyx, petrified wood, rhodonite, quartzite, prase, nephrite, have been found, and can be tumbled into a colourful selection of low value pretty stones. If it is raining, then the nearby museum has thousands of examples to view.
