Ureilite (S3), 2001 find
9.024 kg in 14 pieces; largest stone, 4.258 kg

The Shisr 007 meteorite is one of several relatively large Ureilites found in various desserts over the past two decades. Indeed, Shisr 007 is the the 4th most massive ureilite now listed at the Meteoritical Society's Meteoritical Bulletin Database (May 2014). Ureilites are noted for their unusual combinations of mafic features, diamond polymorphs, and oxygen isotope disparities which defy easy explanation. Two large stones account for ~80% of Shisr 007's total mass. The published literature for this potentially important meteorite appears to be quite sparse. Like most ureilites, olivine and pyroxene (pigeonite) account for the bulk of the meteorite and C-rich interstitial material is also present. The mostly graphitized carbon is responsible for the reduced rims of both Olivine and Pyroxene crystals and has produced some very tiny Fe metal inclusions in the rim areas. Both graphite and diamond have been reported with hints of hexagonal lonsdaleite reported by Nagashima et al. (2012).

The olivine shows both undulatory extinction and planar deformation fractures indicating moderately strong shock level S3. The S3 classification is not at all unexpected as many ureilites have experienced strong shock levels. Indeed, these strong shock have apparently produced many of the ureilite diamonds.

Detailed Mineral List:

Diamond
Formula: C
'Fayalite-Forsterite Series'
Description: olivine (Fo=79) at cores with more Mg-rich rims. Undulatory extinction and planar deformation fractures inidicate moderately severe shock.
Graphite
Formula: C
Description: Raman spectroscopy reveals that compressed graphite is present. These features are presumably due to the uneven compression of the strong, but brief shock event(s) which have produced diamond in some instances.
Iron
Formula: Fe
Description: Tiny Fe metal inclusions are found in narrow rims of olivine and pyroxene crystals.
Pigeonite
Formula: (CaxMgyFez)(Mgy1Fez1)Si2O6
'Pyroxene Group'
Formula: ADSi2O6
Description: The pyroxene appears to be mostly pigeonite — especially at the cores (En 73). Rims are more Mg-rich.
