Fiskalische Tiefbohrung Lieth, Lieth, Elmshorn, Schleswig-Holstein, Deutschland
After the discovery of the salt diapir and associated Permian rocks near Elmshorn in 1844, a national drill project prospecting for coal was launched in 1872, reaching a depth of 1338 meters in 1878, at the times the world's deepest drill hole.
Coal was not found (just rock salt layers were cut in about 1200 m depth), but the project provided valuable information about the regional geology and the Earth's geotherm.
