Mostly covered by glacial and alluvial sediments. The western part is rather flat, the central and eastern part dominated by low hills made of glacial moraines, with firths and cliffs at the coastline of the Baltic sea.
Rocks are only exposed at a few localities, mostly in conjunction with salt domes.
Many of the minerals listed have been found in glacial deposits of material originating in Scandinavia.
Pieces of flint that have been worked out by the glaciers from the underlying Cretaceous chalk are ubiquitous.
