Mine d'agates du Mont Lyall
The Mont Lyall Agate Mine is a dig-for-fee site, in the Chic-Choc Mountains, in central Gaspe Peninsula, in the Quebec Appalachians.
Agate thundereggs and geodes lined with smoky quartz, clear quartz or amethyst crystals are found in rhyolitic flows that have been altered to green clay.
Some geodes contain botryoidal chalcedony (blue chalcedony, carnelian, etc…), sometimes coated with druzy quartz.
Mt Lyall is an ancient volcano, formed in the Devonian epoch.
It is part of an igneous complex known as "Dôme de Lemieux".
Felsic porphyry is found at the top of the mountain, basalt in the middle part, and red porphyric rhyolite at the base.
