A former graphite mine, located 2.5 km S of Aflenz Kurort, at N47.52217 E15.23022.
It comprised 2 adits, about 500 m long, running WNW under the Schöckel and a shaft about 100 m deep.
Before WWI the mine was operated by the “Aflenzer Grafit- und Talksteingewerkschaft GmbH-Wien”. The operation was shut down around 1933 for economic reasons.
The carbon content was reported to be 49 %. Another source in 1925 mentioned 71 % but this is highly unlikely and was probably part of a sales pitch.
Besides the graphite a smaller amount of talk was produced.
Another, much smaller, graphite mine was located nearby, S of Wappensteinhammer at approx. N47.51849 E15.23937.
In 1955 the adits were still partly accessible, but in 1977 the adits were caved in, only the entrances and the dumps behind the railway station “Aflenz” were still visible. “Pingen” could also be seen and these allowed following the adits on the surface.
Lagerstätten Inventar Nr. 138 (gbanr 138.1956).
