The Ambrosia Mine was operated between 1914 and 1920 on the crest of the Magdalena Range approximately 1,500 feet north of the Key Mine. The mine was owned by former Senator Tom Catron and leased to the Mines and Metals Company of Kelly. The mine consisted of two tunnels (Ambrosia and Lower) that contained some oxidized zinc ore that was transported out of the nearby Juanita Mine in 1914, 1916, and 1918. In 1916, two additional tunnels were driven into the west side of the mountain and named the North Ambrosia (or Ambrosia Extension). Some zinc carbonate was taken from the tunnels before they caved in. No record of ore produced has been found after 1920, suggesting that the mine closed at this time. During World War II, most of the Magdalena District was inspected to determine if metals deemed critical to the War could be recovered. The inspection found that all of the Ambrosia tunnels had caved, thus denying access to the ore shoots. Today, the mines require a good hike up the mountain to locate.
