Marine-sedimentary deposit, consisting of sepiolite-palygorskite beds in the upper layer of the Permian Qixia (Chihsia) formation. The same layer also contains nodules of the famous chrysanthemum stone, which consists of flower-shaped celestine aggregates embedded in a dark matrix.
Occurrences of such nodules are widespread in outcrops of the Qixia formation in a large area of South China, but elsewhere, they mostly consist of a mixture of calcite, chalcedony and minor dolomite, which replaced earlier celestine by diagenesis (Yan et al., 2001).
