The Kauaeranga Valley is 13 km to the east of the town of Thames, on the Coromandel Peninsula. There is approx 10km of sealed road followed by about 12 km of gravel road with some side tracks. The river bed is accessible from many pulloffs and parking areas along the road. There is also a number of formed and maintained walking tracks in the valley and numerous camping areas.
The valley is a catchment for a large area of andesitic, rhyolitic and sedimentary rocks many of which have been subject to hydrothermal alteration.
