An unnamed gravel pit, located approximately 8km south of Jackson along US 127 and Blue Ridge Road in Sec. 6, T4S R1E. Owned and periodically operated by the Jackson County Road Commission. Gravel is mined from the Blue Ridge Esker at this location. Blocks of cemented gravel are encountered during excavation, and moved to the side and not used.
A cream white, travertine-like calcite cements gravel and cobbles in the pit. Where space permits, small rhombohedral crystals have developed. The calcite is highly fluorescent in both LW and SW ultraviolet radiation and shows a cream white color. The calcite also shows strong phosphorescence for up to 8 or more seconds after UV radiation is turned off. It also shows phosphorescence following photographic flash.
