Phosphorite deposit, Staffel, Limburg an der Lahn, Limburg-Weilburg, Giessen Region, Hesse, Germany

This particular piece holds a special meaning for me for many reasons. It's provenance is excellent (From the collections of Sir. Warington Smyth, Sir. Arthur Russell, and Albert McGuiness). However, this piece was given to me by my PhD adviser upon the successful defense of my degree in geosciences since I had published a paper on the apatite defect structure of different piece from the same locality (Mason et al. Am. Mineral 2009). It is 4 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall. The child photo is a picture of all the labels associated with the piece.

YL1-77APhillipsite Subgroup

05041660014962684841587.jpg
US Highway 395 outcrop, Mesa, Franklin County, Washington, USA

Bright red prismatic phillipsite crystals contained in weathered basalt vessicles. Collected this specimen in the spring of 2010 on my way from Spokane to Richland. The outcrop is a section of porous weathered Snake river basalt along 395 south of Mesa, WA. For scale the top right most vessicle is 0.4 by 0.4 cm in dimension.

This is one of my first attempts at "macro" mineral photos by taking pictures with my point and shoot through my 10X loupe. Not the best quality picture.

Note: went back and adjusted some of the levels on the pic. Looks a little better and closer to real life.
