Moctezuma is a town located in the center of the state of Sonora, in Mexico. It is the capital of the municipality of Moctezuma and is located at an altitude of 677 meters above sea level.
Its original name was Oposura. It was changed to Moctezuma by decree of the Second Legislature of the Estado de Occidente on September 5, 1828, in honor of Francisco Moctezuma, who was then Minister of War and Navy in the national government.
Although it is supposed that it was a Jesuit named Marcos del Río who achieved its foundation in 1644, there are those who affirm that during the Cristero Revolution in 1926, inscriptions were seen that read: "Oposura 1630" ('Oposura' as its old name); The unofficial nature of these data gives rise to doubts about the history of this town.
Other native people of the place report that at the beginning of the 20th century, when the High Altar was built, the first arch of the nave (in front of the High Altar) was knocked down, and it was found that it had the numbers 1626.
Composed of descendants of ópatas, this town is located on the left bank of the Moctezuma River, on fertile land with easy irrigation, where its people dedicate themselves mainly to cattle raising and mining.
