KPU-FPJGarnet Group X3Z2(SiO4)3 , Beryl Be3Al2(Si6O18)

Unnamed Pegmatite prospect [1], Turret Mining District, Chaffee County, Colorado, USA

At the western workings, at the base of the Quartz/Microcline core and to the left (west) of the shaft, this unknown species of "Garnet" is exposed. It is about 2 1/4 inches in length (65mm) and highly fractured, it would not survive being extracted. Note the small crystal of Beryl below the lichen. Photo taken August, 2013.

This is a view of the western portion of the pegmatite vein. A Quartz/Microcline core is the light-colored rock in the center of the photo, the shaft is behind the large foreground rock. Fragments of Beryl can be found on the dump, the shaft was probabily sunk on the Beryl-bearing portion of the pegmatite vein. Photo taken August, 2013.

Mine shaft

00415120014962183771678.jpg
Unnamed Pegmatite prospect [1], Turret Mining District, Chaffee County, Colorado, USA

There are two workings on this east-west trending pegmatite vein, this is a view of a shaft sunk on the western portion of the vein; the shaft is just over 4 feet wide and about 12 feet deep. Hard telling what the wooden structure was used for. Because the top of the structure is roughly even with the lip of the shaft, a wheel or pulley would place a bucket below the edge of the shaft. Quite possibly, a plank or log was set in the notch for a miner to stand on; if it were a two man operation. one person at the bottom of the shaft would fill a bucket while another at the top would pull the bucket up. Photo taken with a flash; August, 2013.

Two crystal fragments of "Monazite" extracted from the face of the eastern workings. As pictured, both are 3/4 inch across (19mm). Collected August, 2013.

Unnamed Pegmatite prospect [1], Turret Mining District, Chaffee County, Colorado, USA

A highly fractured and weathered crystal fragment of "Monazite" exposed on the face of the eastern workings, at the contact between Microcline and Muscovite; it is about 1 1/4 inches across (31mm). There appears to be a black mineral at its core; I did find some small flat, tabular crystals of "Columbite" at this eastern working. Photo taken August, 2013.

Mine workings

Unnamed Pegmatite prospect [1], Turret Mining District, Chaffee County, Colorado, USA

There are two workings on this east-west trending pegmatite vein, this is a view of the eastern workings. The miner appears to have worked into the hillside 3 to 4 feet; the working face is about 6 feet across and 4 feet high. It is interesting to note that the miner left his tools behind; his shovel was left here, and his pick was found on the side of the dump 10 feet down the hill! About 75 feet to the west, a shaft was sunk on the same pegmatite vein. Photo taken August, 2013.

Petrified wood

Hass 1-12 Prospects, Guffey Mining District, Park County, Colorado, USA

Scattered around the Hass Mine site, one can find fragments of petrified wood. This is a nice multi-colored piece measuring 5 1/2 X 5 X 4 inches (140 X 125 X 100mm). Unfortunately, it is not fluorescent nor is it radioactive...bummer.

Trench

Hass 1-12 Prospects, Guffey Mining District, Park County, Colorado, USA

The Hass Mine is a small uranium mine consisting of a bulldozed area and a short, shallow trench. The mine workings are roughly 150 feet X 150 feet in size. The brownish-orange colored conglomerate on the floor of the bulldozed area and in the trench has the highest radioactivity. View of the trench looking towards the southwest. Photo taken June, 2013.
