| Abstract/Notes | The mineralogy and petrology of the permian igneous rocks of the Oslo region have been subject to studies by many geologists and mineralogists. Comprehensive descriptions were published by W. C. Brøgger, Jakob Schetelig and W.M. Goldschmidt in the early part of this century the mineralogy of the igneous rocks and related contact metamorphism. Further petrological studies were undertaken by T. F. W. Barth, O. Oftedahl, E. Sæther and J. A. Dons from about 1930 - 1960. During the last three decades Gunnar Raade has published a number of articles describing the mineralogy of the miarolitic cavities and pegmatites related to the igneous rocks of the Oslo region. In this work he has had a close cooperation with many mineral collectors in the area.
The dominant plutonic rock in the area around the city of Drammen is an ordinary biotite granite often referred to as "Drammens-granite". Miarolitic cavities are common - especially in the marginal areas of the pluton - and may reach sizes up to 1 m, even if most are 2 - l0 cm in diameter. Close to 70 different mineral species have been identified from the cavities in the Drammens-granite. The ironrich schorl member of the Tourmali-group is not uncommon and was identified by early observers. As a contribution to the mineralogy of the cavities in the Drammensgranite and as a tribute to the previous work done by Gunnar Raade, this article describes an occurrence of Uvite and Dravite tourmalines from Borgenlsen in Asker very close to the contact between the granite and the cambrosilurian limestone and shale. |
