About Lithium Amphibole Subgroup
Formula:
An(Li2)(Z2+3+n-2mZ3+2-n+mLim)(Si8O22)(OH,F,Cl)2
The lithium amphibole subgroup is one of the subgroups belonging to the W(OH,F,Cl) amphibole group. It is defined with Li as the dominant element in the X position ( = IMA B position).
The IMA-CNMNC definition is B(Na + Li)/ΣB ≥ 0.75, BLi/ΣB ≥ BNa/ΣB.
The Lithium amphibole subgroup are further divided into root-name groups that may have orthorhombic (holmquistite group) or monoclinic (clino-holmquistite, pedrizite and rootname 5 groups) symmetry. The root name groups are are defined by their symmetry and charge balance and dominant elements in the A and Z positions (= IMA C positions) in the generic formula above. The various positions in the formula can have the following content:
A position: x = 0 or 1, when 1, it contains Na or K as the dominant elements.
Z position: y = 0 or 1 (pedrizite group). Mg and Fe2+ are the dominant Z2+ elements and Al and Fe3+ are the dominant Z3+.
W position: (OH) or F.
In mindat.org we avoid using variables with the same symbol as elements and deviate from the IMA nomenclaure in that we use X rather than B, Z rather than C and (OH,F,Cl,O) rather than W.
The IMA-CNMNC definition is B(Na + Li)/ΣB ≥ 0.75, BLi/ΣB ≥ BNa/ΣB.
