Formula:
Mn4+(O,OH)2(Mg,Ni,Al,OH)2 · nH2O
Crystal System:
Hexagonal
Reported as Mg-dominant analogue of asbolane. Chemically similar to jianshuiite.
Found in manganese-rich crusts in a drilling core recovered by JOIDES Resolution vessel from a guyot.
Electron microprobe analysis results (EDS mode, mean of 12 analyses, normalized to 100%, OH by analogy to asbolane, wt.%): MgO 9.96, Al2O3 4.12, K2O 0.69, CaO 2.06, MnO 76.83, NiO 6.34. Corresponds to [Mn4+O1.6(OH)0.4]0.4+[(Mg0.28Al0.09Ni0.l)Ca0.04K0.02(OH)1.53]0.4-•nH2O.
In the structure there are ordered (ABAB) layers. There are two sublattices. In one of them the a parameter corresponds to Mn4+-bearing octahedra layers; the other layer has Mg, Ni, and presumably Al. Total thickness of first and second layers is equal to c. "Uninterrupted gradiation from asbolane to buserite" also reported.
