Hopeite crystals from Zimbabwe exhibit a zonal growth structure, the material of adjacent zones differing somewhat in properties but having an identical composition and X-ray diffraction patterns (Spencer, 1908).
So-called β-Hopeite has X = a, sometimes with Y = c and 2E ~ 32½°, or sometimes Y = b and 2E ~ 20°.
α-Hopeite and β-Hopeite differ by the orientation of one water molecule in the crystal structure (Herschke et al., 2004).
