The cleave is a steep sided valley cut by the River Taw through the metamorphosed mudstones and shales bounding the Dartmoor Granite.
The dark sediments generally form a separate unit from the exploited and heavily mineralised skarns which lie closer to the granite.
This geological unit may be considered to approximate the zone where the road from Belstone village joins the valley floor and Sticklepath village.

ⓘ Andalusite Formula: Al2(SiO4)O Habit: Acicular, bladed. Occasionally in loose, radiating clusters.
Cross-sections of crystals show some signs of cruciform colour zoning. Colour: White, pale cream to buff. Description: Cleaved fragments of the local metamorphosed mudstones and shales occasionally contain copious amounts of andalusite crystals grown in random orientation parallel with the rock cleavage.
Weathering of the fragments develops the visibility of the andalusite, and areas where the grystals have been broken may be seen in the edges of the fragments.
Cross sections of crytals show a distinct diamond-shape and larger crystals show some degree of cruciform colour zoning.
