County in southwest England. Previously the name Devonshire was commonly used on mineral labels with Devon becoming standard following local government reorganisation in the 1970's.
Mining dates back to pre-history with significant archaeological evidence (particularly alluvial workings on Dartmoor) to suggest the county was an important bronze-age tin producer.

Fluorescence: Reacts under Long Wave UV: dim brownish orange
Description: Appears as sparse, somewhat earthy encrustations of miniscule, brownish-yellow crystals on more exposed and weathered surfaces. As with other uranium minerals, this is associated with the weathering of uraninite in the granite. Crystals are transparent and sufficiently small to give the impression of a pale colouration at moderate magnification (x45).

Description: Kingsbury, A.W.G. (1964) in Mineralogical Magazine 35, lviii states: "Colourless isolated crystals (2cm) from a pegmatite vein in the old aplite quarry at Meldon, Okehampton, Devon". However, von Knorring, O. and Condliffe, E. (1984): On the occurrence of niobium-tantalum and other rare-element minerals in the Meldon aplite, Devonshire. Mineralogical Magazine 48, 443-448, states "Beryllonite occurs in whitish grains some 2 mm across and is mostly enclosed in elbaite with some lepidolite and quartz. It is fibrous and silky in appearance and is closely associated with pollucite, orthoclase, petalite, and lepidolite." 2cm vs. 2mm... Size is irrelevant. Only reports are from Kingsbury and not to be believed.

Colour: yellow
Description: Cacoxenite is found as a bright yellow encrustation in fractures in the rock of the quarry, often in association with porous quartz veins. Where it is found, it is locally abundant but is absent through most of the quarry. Larger plates showing the phosphatic mineralisation vary across the suface between clove-brown and bright yellow, occasionally to orange and red. The cacoxenite is generally between a deep yellow-brown and bright yellow.

Habit: Amorphous.
Colour: Milk white to creamy white, also various light to mid browns when stained by 'limonite'
Description: Many fracture surfaces in the Wavellite-rich mudstones are coated with a milky-white, amorphous material, often stained with 'limonite'. No crystalline structure has been observed in this material to date. Some fractures completely infilled with this material. Placement on the outside of wavellite balls places formation late in the mineralisation of the site. While still wet, the texture is somewhat greasy and reminiscent of fungal growth, but on drying, a fine, earthy texture is revealed, with a hardness of around 2.5 - 3 Tentative identification requires further investigation.
