The Golden Vale Gold Mine is 5 kilometres south-east of the former Copperfield town-site. There is a severely weathered open pit at the location, several buildings and machinery, much mullock and disturbed ground. A separate area bordering just south-west also contains a collection of buildings, machinery and tailings, which maps shows as the Crowley lease.
More information is needed on these localities. The mine under the Golden Vale name was active in 1899, crushing at the Mt Ida state battery 50 tonnes at 41.97 ounces, and 76.12 ounces dollied. It is next found as a lease applied for in November 1935 by James Donnelly, Patrick Donnelly, Bernard Donnelly and Samuel Watt. GML 5651Z. A mention was made in passing that it was still active in 1941.
Several small historic workings, and modern prospects exist to the east of this location.
The state of the pit would indicate a company mined here several decades ago. With the substantial road into the site and buildings, separate lease to the modern exploration company activity to the east, and lack of public information, it could be surmised Golden Vale is an active prospecting camp.
