Browns is a township about 31km north of Invercargill.
Browns is a small town of about twenty houses, strung along the highway, 10 kilometres east of Winton.
The Browns Lime Company was formed in 1915 to produce agricultural lime for farmers. In 1998 they merged with Awarua Limeworks, and renamed themselves AB Lime. Family members of one of the founding directors, Frederick Chisholm, still control the company.
There are two locations. Shortly after the merger, the old quarry, situated at the north-west edge of Browns closed, and operations moved to the new quarry site, 5 kilometres by road to the north-west. The old overgrown quarry is on private property, and the new quarry is active. Mindat co-ordinates are the old quarry site.
