A former diatomaceous earth mine located 4.7 km (2.9 miles) SSE of Lompoc. In 1893, a diatomaceous earth mine, formerly owned by Johns Manville, World Mineral, and Celite corporation, Imerys Inc.(as of 2005), opened in the southern hills in Miguelito Canyon. It became the largest marine diatomite mine in the world, and at one time was the largest employer in the Lompoc valley.
