A former lode Au-Ag-Cu occurrence/mine located in the E½ sec. 6, T8N, R14E, and in sec. 31, T9N, R14E, SBM, 0.4 km (0.2 mile) SSW of Hidden Hill (coordinates of record), on federal reservation land (Mojave National Preserve/East Mojave National Scenic Area). Discovered in 1882. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters. Clark lists this mine as the "Hidden Hill" Mine. In addition to the 2 sections given above, Wright (1953) also includes sec. 1, T8N, R13E, SBM.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in andesite, basalt and quartz monzonite. The ore body strikes N30E and dips 45NW at a thickness of 1.22 meters. The veins are displaced by a number of north & south faults. 2 sets of veins occur with one trending N in sec. 31, and the other trending NE in sec. 6. Most of the veins are 1 to 12 inches (2.5 to 30 cm) thick and follow brecciated fracture zones. Local alteration
includes a hydrothermally altered zone 100 feet thick in sec. 31 with minor amounts of Cu & Fe sulfides. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 3 (Mojave Desert, Death Valley area, and Eastern Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a 150 foot incline, 2 adits at 590 and 100 feet long, in the SE¼SE¼ sec. 6; a 200 foot adit in the NE¼SE¼ sec. 6; and, inclines, drifts and a 200 foot adit to the vein in the W½SE¼ sec. 6, plus pits in sec. 31.
Production data are found in: Southern Pacific Company (1964b).
Intermittently active through the 1950's. $19,000 (period values) was reported from sec. 6. One ore pocket, mined in 1915, was said to consist of 300 pounds of ore valued at $13,000. The Golden Queen claim yielded over $6,000 (period values)prior to 1907. Total production is undetermined.
Analytical data results: Noted for pockets of high-grade ore chip sample from a 4 foot thick vein in sec. 31 that assayed 0.34 ounce Au, 0.5 ounce Ag and 1.66% Cu. Selected samples from the lower adit in the SE¼SE¼ sec. 6 assayed at 0.125 ounce Au and 1.5 ounce Ag.
