Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Atlas Mineral and Machinery Co. Quarry, "Opposite Lafayette" locality of Gordon (1922)
Two adjacent serpentine quarries in ultramafic rock. The quarries were noted by Troost (1826 p. 14) and were long worked for soapstone for various uses. The quarries were operated between 1906 and 1911 by the Atlas Mineral and Machine Company, Lincoln, NJ, which sold almost 1400 tons of solid soapstone, and 1,100 tons of ground soapstone in 1911. Construction of the Schuylkill Expressway in about 1951 obliterated one or both of quarries. (Source: Sloto, Ron (2009), also the source of the majority of the mineral list, and the publication references earlier sources for many of them, including Benge & Wherry (1906).
