America quarry
The Biebosch Quarry or Groeve America is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The quarry is located southeast of Valkenburg, just behind the Kalkoven (lime kiln) Biebosch near the Sibbergrubbe. The open quarry is located in the western part of the Biebosch slope forest on the northeastern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
Approximately 300 meters to the northeast are the Gewandgroeve I and Gewandgroeve II,
approximately 170 meters to the south is the Vallenberg Quarry, approximately 225 meters to the southwest is the Groeve behind Lemmekenskoel
and approximately 200 meters to the west are the Beckersbergske and Quarry next to Beckersbergske.
From the 17th to the 19th century, block crushers extracted marl in two underground limestone quarries.
When the Biebosch lime kiln was used to burn limestone in the 1930s, an open-pit quarry was started behind the lime kiln. This open-pit quarry has caused the two underground Biebosch quarries to disappear.
In 2018, the Biebosch, together with the quarry area, was transferred from Staatsbosbeheer to Natuurmonumenten in the context of a land exchange.
In the autumn of 2020, the quarry was cleared of trees, shrubs and climbing plants.
The underground quarry has disappeared as a result of the open-pit quarry.
