Cluijsberg quarry
The Cluysberg Quarry or Cluijsberg Quarry is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Eijsden-Margraten. The underground quarry is located northeast of Bemelen in the Koelbosgrub dry valley near the Koelebosweg. On the other side of this dry valley lies the Krekelberg. The quarry is located on the western edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Maas Valley. In the area, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
About 150 meters to the southwest is the Winkelberg quarry,
about 300 meters to the south are the Groeve Onder de weg,
Bemelerbosgroeve I and Bemelerbosgroeve III,
about 200 meters to the southeast is the Gasthuisdel quarry
and about 300 meters to the east are the Nevenkoelebos quarry and Koelebos quarry.
The head of the Bemelerberg is located approximately 400 meters to the west.
Before 1600, the quarry was used by block breakers.[4]
In the 18th century, the cave house in the quarry was used as a hermitage.
The last hermit died in 1804.
In 1829, part of the quarry ceiling collapsed.
The Cluysberg quarry is a medium-sized quarry of approximately 100 by 60 meters.
West of the large entrance is Kleine Cluysberg III, east of the large entrance limestone has also been quarried.
The hermitage in the quarry is a national monument. Remains of the former hermitage have been preserved, including a terrace, a window, and a doorway.
