The Ubehebe Crater is about 600 feet deep and half a mile across. The crater was formed by a unique process described as a Maar volcano. As a plume of molten magma rises toward the surface it encounters ground water producing a large volume of steam. The steam is trapped in a pocket under a resistant geological strata. When the steam pressure can no longer be contained by the rock strata a violent explosion occurs producing the crater.
