Bad Sulza, Krähenhütte,

The beginnings of limestone mining in this place date back to the 18th century. Since the second half of 19th century, bone elements of Triassic reptiles such as Nothosaurus and Placodus have been collected here. This was done by the owner of the mine, Friedrich Wagner, who paid his workers when they found something specific in the rocks during mine work. The collection of 158 bone elements was sent to the Natural History Museum in Erfurt and is still exhibited there today. For this reason, it is one of the most important discoveries of Middle Triassic limestone for science and others.

In the years 1933 - 1937, the quarry was exploited by prisoners of the first Bad Sulza Concentration Camp (KZ Bad Sulza) in this area, established next to the quarry with its headquarters in today's Krahenhutte mountain restaurant. Initially, this activity was paid for by the State of Thuringia, and mainly Germans (compatriots) from this state were sent to the concentration camp. In later years, the concentration camp was financed by the Third Reich ... In 1937, this activity was transferred to the newly established Concentration Camp in Buchenwlad (KZ Buchenwald)... the extracted stone was mainly used to expand the city of Bad Sulza

The main mineral is calcite... we will also notice limonite and managan dendrites
