The Velderheide forest area or "Heksenkuil" ("Witch pit") is located in the north of Beerse, near the municipal waste dump. The 12 ha site is noted for its disused clay pits, an artifial lake and a small forested area.
The area used to be part of the Abtsheide, located in the north of Beerse, which was about 900 hectares in size. In 1311, John II of Brabant donated the Abtsheide to the Saint Michael's Abbey of Antwerp. It was a vast plain with inland dunes, shallow lakes and swamps. In 1666 the municipality of Beerse bought the Abtsheide. The inhabitants were allowed to let the sheep graze, mow heather, cut peat... In 1772 the Empress Maria Theresa issued an ordinance which obligated the municipality to either cultivate the wasteland or to sell it for cultivation. In 1820/1823 the municipality of Beerse sold parts of the land and heath for cultivation. In 1845, the Dessel-Schoten canal, which also ran through Beerse, was constructed. Brick factories were built along the canal, and, in the immediate vicinity of these brick factories, small clay pits were (and still are) exploited.
A number of these old clay pits are still visible today.
