Surface outcrops of the Niobrara Formation along Medicine Creek included a layer of jasper (silicified sandstone, known primarily as Smoky Hills Jasper, but also Alma, Graham, Niobrara and Republican River Jasper) which was several feet thick and was a significant source of material for flaked tools such as arrowheads from as early as 11,000 B.C. and continuing until the 1800s. The outcrops are now buried or underwater in the Medicine Creek Reservoir.

Archaeological excavations at several locations in the reservoir area were undertaken during construction of the dam and reservoir, which was completed in 1949. Fragments of jasper, including artifacts, are sometimes found downstream in the Republican River in Nebraska and northern Kansas. Arrowheads made from Smoky Hills jasper have been found in adjacent states and the quarry was evidently an important source of raw material for numerous tribes in the Central Plains.

Note: Location shown is approximate and is based on the estimated location of one prominent archeological site (the Allen Site).
