Barre Granite Quarry
Millstone Hill in Graniteville (Barre) is home to the famous Rock of Ages (Barre Granite) quarry. Once run by the Boutwell, Milne & Varnum Company, Rock of Ages is now part of Polycor.
Since the 1920s, the firm has catered to curious visitors to their works, offering tours and even an all-stone outdoor bowling ally made from their product.
An 1873 atlas shows the names Bates, Harrington, and Parker as owners of quarries on Millstone Hill. The history of area quarries is one of name changes, mergers, and purchases. For example, in 1899, eight separate quarries were listed in the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company Long Distance Telephone Directory. By this time, the names of "Bates, Harrington, and Parker" were not among them.
