In the late 1860's the Mount Welcome Gold Mining Company, Central Gold Mining Company, West Coast Prospecting and Gold Mining Company, and the Telegraph Gold Mining Company were all registered to mine an auriferous quartz lode in the Mount Welcome area.
Between 1869-1870 five shafts were sunk 10-20 metres, with only a small quantity of gold found, and within eighteen months all the companies had been wound up.
The site is north of Porirua, between Pukerua Bay and the Paekakariki Hill Road, marked as a small old cutting into the crest of a very steep ridge. It appears to be on private property with two houses nearby.
No minerals currently recorded for this locality.
