Abandoned coal mine.

The Beaumont Mine is presently a large open pit, 1.5 kilometres north of the Ohai town site.

The mine was originally developed in 1979 by Solid Energy as an underground operation to test mining techniques, employing fifteen miners and twelve supervisory and maintenance staff. The mine produced 400 tonnes of coal per day, and closed in 1984. It was later developed as an open pit.

The mine is named after the Beaumont Coal Measures. The Cretaceous Ohai Group contains three formations- the Wairio Coal Measures, New Brighton Conglomerate, and Morley Coal Measures. The Eocene Nightcaps group which extends south-east towards the town of Nightcaps, contains the Beaumont Coal Measures, overlain by the Orauea Mudstone. An unconformity separates the two major groups, distinguished by fossil microflora.

Most of the production is from the Morley seams. This formation has a combined vertical thickness of coal seams of 4.1 metres, although seams 50 metres thick have been recorded. Coal is ranked at sub-bituminous A to high volatile Bituminous C.

The Beaumont Coal Measures average 1.4 metres thick, although seams up to 7 metres thick have been recorded in the Coaldale pit near Nightcaps. Coal is ranked as sub-bituminous C-B. There are up to three seams each in the Beaumont, Morley, and New Brighton formations, and one in the Wairio Formation.
