In the Roussillon basin, the Quarternary is represented by large alluvial terraces storied over the streams and by modern alluvium deposited in the valleys.
The Pleistocene corresponds to a set of layered terraces visible above the Têt River. They have arisen from the depression of the fluvial network in the Pliocene deposits.
One can distinguish six levels of interlocking terraces all the more elevated as they are older.
These terraces are essentially composed of mainly siliceous pebbles for the high terraces ; siliceous, gneissic, granitic or schistous stones for the lower terraces. (Courtois and al).
The Garriga is an alluvial terrace of the Têt river basin at Finestret where huge quantities of pebbles/cobbles have accumulated. The presence of these stones did not prevent the soil viability owing to a herculean work from people in the past to pull all these stones off the ground. That gives an incredible landscape of fields enclosed by stone walls to six meters wide and two meters high (see satellite view). Here and there several stone huts complete the landscape.
