An abandoned coal mine lower down the escarpment than the Stockton coal mine. The Westport Coal Company constructed the Millerton Incline in 1891, to take coal down the 260 metres to the coast. The incline was two sets of narrow gauge tracks, transporting coal carts by a rope system. Underground mining started in 1896, and ended in 1969.
The town of Millerton developed with the mine, and once boasted two hotels, several shops, churches, sports ground and library. These days a few houses remain with a population of about thirty. The town was named after H.J. Miller, one time chairman of the Westport Coal Company.
The area is little visited but worthwhile. Some old photographs and maps can be found in the information centre, a house donated to the community by Leicester Kyle upon his death. Beyond this visitors are on their own to explore. The bathhouse ruins are on the eastern side of the hamlet. The overgrown portal, complete with coal carts the opposite side of town. There are also great views and a few waterfalls to be seen.
