A scoping study was initiated by BC Iron Limited in 2008, across an area about 35 kilometres south-west of Nullagine on the Bonney Downs Station. The deposits are channel ore type (pea gravel) forming numerous steep sided mesas in the area, which is some five kilometres west of the Newman-Nullagine Road.
In 2009, Fortescue Metals was given part of the deposit as a joint venture with BC, in return for access to its rail head at Fortescue's Christmas Creek mine to the south. In 2010, a haul road was constructed to this mine (later involving a court case with the contractor), accommodation village erected, processing plant and shallow pits at the Outcamp deposit. This covers several mesas along a 9 kilometre strike bordering the south side of Bonnie Creek (BC stands for Bonnie Creek in the company's name).
Other deposits striking for several kilometres trending south south-west to north north-east are Bonnie East, Warrigal, and Coongan amongst others, which have seen some minor development and much exploration.
The mine was developed when iron ore prices were high, but shortly after opening prices fell. In December 2015, the mine closed as the iron ore price had reached uneconomic levels to be profitable. October 2016 the mine was sold to Fortescue Metals for $1, and 75% of royalties from any future mining. The mine is estimated to be worth 570 million dollars Australian. BC Iron states the sale of the mine relieves it of substantial costs in keeping the mine on care and maintenance.
