Ordinary Chondrite (LL6)
Find, 1907; 375g
A nearly complete stone was found. Classification as an 'Olivine-hypersthene' chondrite (precursor to its current LL6 ordinary chondrite classification), its olivine and orthopyroxene composition (Fa30,Fs25.5,respectively), bulk iron (~20 wt%), and its equilibrated petrologic type provide us with confirmation that olivine and orthopyroxene are present in chondrules, fragments, and grains. However, further information about mineralogical details are apparently either sparse or non-existent in the readily available scientific literature.
Näs is one of 13 meteorites recovered from Sweden and the only type 'LL' chondrite (an ordinary chondrite with very low bulk iron relative to other ordinary chondrites). As is the case for many Swedish meteorites, the main mass has been held at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm.
Nota bene: The coordinates provided here from the Meteoritical Bulletin Database appear to be merely formal as they represent an apparent fjord or river near Näs. During winter some meteorites are recovered from river ice, but English language references are silent on this particular point.
