Canteen Koppie is a South African national monument located on the banks of the Vaal River at Barkly West. Diamonds were discovered here in 1869 and the site became the first alluvial diamond diggings in South Africa. The site also has abundant Acheulian Stone Age artefacts suggesting the gravels are at least Late Pliocene to Middle Pleistocene in age. Dating of overburden sands yielded an age of 125,000 years. Historical records suggest that between 10,000 - 15,000 carats of diamonds were produced from the deposit (de Wit, 2008).
