Locality type:

The sediments that are now exposed in the park were laid down during the Paleocene Period about 60 million years ago. As the Rocky Mountains rose, erosion transported vast amounts of materials down slope toward the east. These sediments were mixed with many ash falls from volcanos located west of the park including huge amounts of ash from the Yellowstone super volcano. During all of this, large fresh water swamps rich with flora and fauna periodically flourished and were subsequently buried adding organic matter to the stratigraphy in the form of thin seams of lignite coal.

The Little Missouri River cut through these sediments exposing about 620 feet of the Tongue River formation creating typical badlands topography. Sandstone concretions cap weird shapes in the bentonite clay now called “hoodoos”. Over geologic time some of the coal seams ignited and burned for many years fusing the adjacent sediments forming colorful “clinker” deposits. Petrified wood is plentiful. Much of it has been identified as sequoia and large standing stumps can be seen. Fossils found here include freshwater mollusk, lizards, crocodiles, turtles, fish and fossil bison bones.
