A former surface and underground abestos mine located in secs. 23, 25 & 26, T8N, R14E; and in secs. 19, 20, 29, 30, 32, 33, T8N, R15E, about 2¼ miles WNW of Horse Camp Mesa, and 8 miles SE of Young, on National Forest land. The property owned by the American Asbestos Cement Corp. location consists of 93 claims. Discovered 1916. Produced 1921-1954. Owned by the American Asbestos Cement Corp. (1979).
Mineralization is a vein deposit with a linear, horizontal ore body hosted in the Mescal Limestone. The deposit is flat-lying and crops out in cliff faces. The asbestos occurs as pockets, veins, and lenses.
Ore control was bedding and intrusions. An associated rock unit is diabase.
Workings include several adits (coyoting) and opencuts. A mill is located on site. Production has included crude asbestos grades: No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4; soft fiber of good length & tensile strength.
