An albite crystal in the quartz core

This mega-crystal of albite measures ca. 93cm in width and is well over 1 meter in hight. Such crystals weigh likely close to 2 tons.

Zonation of the pegmatite dike

Here the zonation of the pegmatite is clearly visible. The contact zone with the amphibolite is a coarse grained mix of feldspar and quartz, with no or little graphic granite. Then there is a zone with large albite crystals associated with biotite. Near the contact with the biotite. the quartz in the core shows discolorisation, indicatin g the presence of radioactivity. A tiny little fragment of monazite was found in between the biotite plates. The quartz core contains some larger albite crystals, partly with allright crystal development. However, they are all fractured, and impossible to prepare out.

Back end of the quarry

In the back end of the quarry it can be seen that the pegmatite to the right is a stepp dipping dike in ca. NWW-SEE direction, with a second branch in the left side of the photo. It might very well be that the amphibolite is just a xenolite that sunk into the pegmatite, or it might also be part of the country rock in which the pegmatite penetrated. Difficult to say from the exposures around the quarry.

Gabbro/diabase?

Somewhat unusual vein/dike of a dark, unidentified rock (gabbro/diabase?) in a much lighter amphibolite kind of rock. This vein is nearly, but not 100% concordant with the striation of the amphibolite. It cannot be said that this is a common kind of phenomenon in the Evje-iveland area.
