Abandoned quarries that exploited two superimposed lava flows separated by a palaeosol (consisting of pyroclastic flow and lahar deposits of the 1631 eruption). The upper horizon is a lava flow of the 1760 eruption, whereas the lower one was attributed by older authors to a presumed effusive event linked to the 1631 eruption. According to more recent authors (Arnò et al., 1987; Rosi et al., 1993) the so-called 1631 lavas are medieval lavas attributable to the AD 968 and 1137 eruptions.

Minerals are found in lava flows and ejecta.

Crystallised minerals in lavas include augite, biotite, fayalite, fluorapatite, magnetite, sanidine, sodalite, and vonsenite.
Typical minerals found as encrustations in lava fractures of the so-called 1631 lavas are atacamite, azurite, chrysocolla, hausmannite, malachite, and "vesbine" (essentially a mixture of Cu-Pb vanadates and chrysocolla - see below).

Mineralised ejecta are observed as xenoliths embedded in lava flows, or as lava and metamorphosed volcanic bombs in the pyroclastic layers. Xenolith minerals include lime, fluorapatite, forsterite, and mica. Minerals observable in cavities in lava ejecta comprise aragonite, ferrohornblende, leucite, siderite, and zeolites (analcime, chabazite-K, phillipsite-K). Typical minerals in the metamorphosed ejecta are andradite var. melanite, anorthite, diopside, haüyne, hydromagnesite, meionite, nepheline, spinel, and vesuvianite.
