| Abstract/Notes | The Pokiok Pluton is one of several granitic bodies in west-central New Brunswick. Highly deformed amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks in the vicinity of the pluton were previously considered to be the hornfelsed equivalents of Ordovician and Silurian strata in the aureole of the Devonian Pokiok granite.In this paper it is suggested that the highly deformed metamorphic rocks are not the result of Devonian hornfelsing but that they represent structural outliers of a pre-Lower Devonian and, by implication, pre-Middle Silurian fold belt. This belt displays features of a previously unrecognized orthotectonic zone in central New Brunswick.Several major faults have been reported which define a horst and graben pair. Movement occurred along the faults after the emplacement of the Pokiok Pluton, most of which now lies within the horst. Due to the uplift of the horst and its erosion in Carboniferous time, remnants of roof pendants of the metamorphic rocks have been structurally isolated from similar strata in the graben as well as from Cambro-Ordovician and Silurian rocks of lower metamorphic grade in the surrounding area. |
