| Abstract/Notes | The volcanic massif of the Coirons, located near the Rhône valley, is built of flows and dykes. The flows which cover mesozoic sediments are essentially of alkali basalt composition, whereas the dykes vary from analcite-nepheline basanites to quartz normative trachyandesites. Five representative samples of contrasting compositions and mineralogy (haüyne ankaratrite, analcite-nepheline basanite, hornblende basalt, trachy-andesite and mugearite) have been studied in detail by microprobe. The chemical analyses (major and trace elements) show that the majority of the lavas are magnesium-poor basalts (MgO less than 6 %) which can be interpreted as the product of amphibole + olivine + clinopyroxene fractionation of a normal (= MgO rich) basalt. The haüyne ankaratrite seems the result of contamination of a Mg-poor lava by calcareous sediments. Quartz normative rocks could also be the results of fractionation processes. |
