Abstract/Notes
A detailed description of the composition and structure of ancient ophiolites and associated metamorphic rocks in the Polar Urals and Western Sayan is provided. In the Polar Urals, over a 400-km stretch of the Syum-Keu, Kharche-Ruz, Rai-Iz, and Voikaro-Syn'insky massifs, dunite-harzburgite, dunite-wehrlite-clino-pyroxenite-eucrite, and dunite-lherzolite-websterite-metagabbro-norite formations (including metamorphic analogues) are characterized, as well as a western metamorphic belt containing garnet peridotites, eclogites, and glaucophane schists, possibly related to the Precambrian ophiolite association. The ophiolites of the eastern strip are represented by a complete stratified section (including dike complexes, tonalite-plagiogranites and volcanics) and serve as the basement of the eugeosynclinal zone of the Uralides.

In the Western Sayan, the Kurtushibin belt, containing a complete section of Precambrian oceanic-type ophiolites, a mélange band, and a zone of glaucophane schists, is characterized, as is the Borussky ophiolite belt, which is tectonically more severely disturbed and differs from the Kurtushibin belt in composition and formation conditions. General characteristics and classification of crustal ophiolites and probable models of their formation are discussed.

The book will be of interest to a wide range of geologists, tectonists, petrographers and mineralogists.
